The Essentials

Initially, it is recommended that you use an up-to-date copy of the Highway Code and

Driving – The Essential Skills. These two books will give you the essential background to enforce the tuition received during your driving lessons. They cover all aspects of road usage and the latest techniques for safe driving. Driving – The Essential Skills offers guidance on:

¤ The driver and the law

¤ manoevering

¤ defensive driving

¤ all-weather driving

¤ breakdowns

¤ towing

¤ European driving

and, as such is an excellent book for new and experienced drivers alike. While the

Highway Code gives you all the rules that apply to all the different types of road user;

not only drivers but pedestrians, horse riders, cyclists and  motor-cyclists.

Useful

Know Your Traffic Signs contains an explanation of almost every road sign in use in the UK today and greatly expands on the traffic signs section of the Highway Code.  As the book says, "Knowing your traffic signs can be a matter of life and death - yours or

somebody else's". It also contains a brief history of traffic signs from Roman times to

modern day.

As Your Test Approaches

As your driving skills develop and your Theory test approaches The Official DSA

Theory Test Guide for Car Drivers or The Official Driving Test  may prove useful.  The Official Driving Test is split into five parts:

¤ Part One tells you what you need to do before the test.

¤ Part Two gives you the test requirements with simple, clear advice.

¤ Part Three shows what is required if you need to take a test to tow a trailer.

¤ Part Four gives details about the extended test for disqualified drivers.

¤ Part Five contains the official syllabus for learning to drive and lists the skills

you need to learn before taking your test.

If you intend to augment your driving lessons by having a qualified driver sit with you

while you practice, they should read Helping Learner Drivers to Practice. It is worth

reading this book so that you know how to help a learner to learn while not contradicting what is taught during proper driving lessons.

In Addition

There are several other Books, VHS-Videos, DVDs and CD-ROMS that will help to build your knowledge and experience. These include practice videos for the Hazard Perception Test, which are available for PCs and DVD players. The official DSA DVD HPT "tests" are a very useful tool to practice on and the quality of the video is far better than that of many 'third party' offerings.
